Yet few people have faced a tragedy as strange and devastating as what happened to Jared and Misty Blackwelder, dairy farmers from Springfield, Missouri.
On a Saturday morning in 2017, they carried out their usual chore of feeding their cows, unaware that disaster was quietly approaching.
At the time, the worst of the local flooding had passed.
Though storm clouds lingered and thunder echoed in the distance, the Blackwelders allowed their 32 dairy cows to roam the pasture for the day, expecting to bring them in that evening as usual.
Tragically, just a few hours later, the couple returned to an unimaginable scene—all 32 cows had been struck and k!lled by lightning.
The sudden loss left them staring at the lifeless bodies of their entire herd.
The Wright County, Missouri Farm Bureau later shared photos online and encouraged the public to offer prayers for the grieving farmers.
“This sort of thing isn’t unheard of,” Missouri Farm Bureau President Stan Cody told CBS News.
“But the scale of this loss is what made it so devastating.”
A local veterinarian examined the site and confirmed that lightning had indeed caused the d3aths.
He noted that in his experience, it was rare for more than six cows to be k!lled by a single strike.
In this case, the herd may have instinctively huddled together for shelter from the approaching storm, which tragically made them more vulnerable.
Jared, heartbroken, explained, “They’re not like pets, but the ones I milked—I raised them all. With dairy cows, you’re with them twice a day. It really hits hard.”
The emotional toll was matched by the financial loss. With each cow valued between $2,000 and $2,500, the couple estimated their total loss to be over $60,000.
What happened to the Blackwelders serves as a powerful reminder of nature’s unpredictability and how, in a matter of moments, everything can change.
Despite the randomness of the event, the emotional and financial blow they suffered left a deep mark on their lives.
